JAMB uncovers 9,469 fake tertiary institution admissions Nigeria for 2024. Offenders face sanctions as CAPS remains the only legal admission system

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has uncovered 9,469 fake tertiary institution admissions Nigeria-wide for the 2024 academic session.

According to JAMB, these illegal admissions were carried out outside its Central Admission Processing System, CAPS, which remains the only legally recognised platform for university entries in the country.

Kano State University of Science and Technology topped the list with 2,215 fake entries, followed by Ladoke Akintola University of Technology with 1,215.

Gombe State University, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, and Federal University of Technology, Owerri also recorded high numbers.

CAPS is JAMB’s online platform introduced to streamline and centralise the admission process, ensuring transparency and fairness across all institutions. It allows students to monitor their application status while institutions are held to consistent standards of evaluation.

“This system was put in place to stop manipulation and ensure every candidate gets what they deserve,” a JAMB official said.

Admissions conducted outside CAPS not only violate national education policy but also risk disqualifying students from participating in the National Youth Service Corps programme.

At JAMB’s 2025 policy meeting, Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa reaffirmed that such admissions are illegal. “Any admission conducted outside CAPS, regardless of its intentions, is illegal,” he said.

“Both institutions and candidates involved will be held accountable. Sanctions may include asset withdrawal and prosecution of officers or governing council members,” he added.

JAMB has warned that it will continue to investigate and penalise any institution engaging in these practices, ensuring that integrity remains central to the nation’s higher education system.
