FCT School closure report leads to suspension as Wike denies ordering shutdown and directs disciplinary action over the misleading viral memo

According to officials on Monday, the FCT School closure report has triggered swift disciplinary action after the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, ordered the immediate suspension of the Mandate Secretary for Education, Dr Danlami Hayyo.

The move followed a viral memo claiming that all government schools in the FCT were instructed to shut down by 28 November 2025.

Wike, who strongly denied issuing any directive of that nature, also instructed the FCT Head of Service to discipline the Director of School Services at the Secondary Education Board, Aishatu Alhassan, for her role in circulating the false information.

The minister described the report as completely inaccurate and misleading.

The memo at the centre of the controversy, titled “Urgent Need for Early Closure of Schools Due To Security Concerns,” had ordered principals to end academic activities early and dismiss students in an orderly manner.

It quickly spread across social platforms, prompting public concern over alleged rising insecurity.

In a statement released by Wike’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, the FCT Administration clarified that no instructions were given for schools to close early, and that the academic calendar remains unchanged.

Olayinka stressed that the information did not originate from any authorised level of the administration.

The administration assured residents that security around schools remains stable and that Wike has directed the resumption of Operation Sweep and other protective measures across the territory.

Officials urged the public to rely solely on verified communication channels to prevent the spread of unconfirmed or sensationalised reports.
