Federal Polytechnic Bauchi closes indefinitely after student protests over hostel robbery turn violent. Police arrest three robbery suspects and detain 48 others

The Federal Polytechnic Bauchi closure was announced on Tuesday following violent protests by students over a late-night robbery at the male hostel that left two students injured.

According to Registrar Alhaji Kasimu Salihu, the attack occurred when “unscrupulous elements” invaded the hostel, stealing valuables and assaulting students.

While management moved to address the peaceful protest, it was reportedly hijacked by hoodlums, leading to the suspension of all academic activities. Students were given two hours to vacate the campus.

Witnesses said over 50 phones were stolen during the midnight raid, with several students wounded. Student Union Government President Haruna Umar described the incident as unprecedented in the school’s history.

Bauchi Police Command confirmed the arrest of three robbery suspects and detention of 36 male and 12 female individuals allegedly involved in the unrest.

Police spokesman CSP Ahmed Wakili said the suspects confessed to stealing phones and laptops, and injuring students who resisted.

Security operatives were deployed to disperse the crowd and restore order, with minimal force applied after initial resistance. Investigations are ongoing.
