FIFA World Cup 2026 Ticket Error as governing body asks fans who received free tickets due to glitch to pay or lose seats

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has admitted a ticketing system error that mistakenly issued free 2026 World Cup tickets to dozens of fans and is now demanding payment or cancellation of their seats.

FIFA confirmed that approximately 60 supporters were allocated tickets at “0 USD” due to a technical issue during the checkout process for the tournament’s ticket sales.

In a statement released via its official X account on Thursday, the organisation said the affected fans had been notified of the error and instructed to complete payment at the correct price.

FIFA explained that the tickets remain reserved but warned that failure to pay within the stipulated timeframe could result in cancellation.

Reports indicate that the affected supporters have been given seven days to settle the outstanding payments or forfeit their allocations entirely.

According to Ticket Talk Network, which first reported the incident, the tickets in question cover group-stage matches scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada.

The development comes amid increasing scrutiny of FIFA’s ticketing system for the expanded 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The governing body has recently faced criticism over rising ticket prices, with fan groups describing the pricing structure as excessive and unfair.

Further controversy emerged after reports that FIFA’s official resale platform listed premium final tickets at extremely high prices, sparking backlash from supporters and advocacy groups.

Authorities in New York and New Jersey have also launched investigations into World Cup ticketing practices, focusing on alleged price increases across multiple matches during different sales phases.

FIFA has maintained that its pricing structure aligns with applicable laws in host countries, while insisting it is committed to ensuring fair access for fans.
