FMC Abuja emergency reforms ordered by FG after viral video shows accident victims denied care. Minister Salako pledges accountability and nationwide improvements

The Federal Government has announced FMC Abuja emergency reforms following a viral video showing accident victims being denied urgent treatment at the hospital.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Tunji Iziaq Salako, made the declaration during an unannounced visit to the Federal Medical Centre in Abuja on Sunday.

The video, which quickly gained traction online, sparked public anger and led to an immediate government investigation.

Speaking to medical staff during the inspection, Salako said, “Even if you’ve done a million things right, one mistake is what the public will remember.”

As part of the reforms, the minister directed the doubling of casualty officers per shift and the urgent deployment of newly hired health assistants. He also ordered improvements to infrastructure and security across the facility.

Dr Timothy Sama’ila, head of the emergency unit, confirmed the challenges, stating, “We have serious space and manpower issues. We are overwhelmed most days.”

Salako also announced that the Federal Government would soon roll out a national emergency care training programme. The initiative aims to standardise how hospitals across Nigeria respond to critical cases.

“No Nigerian should be denied life-saving care due to preventable failures,” he stressed.
