Bayer Leverkusen extend Francis Onyeka’s contract until 2032 before sending the midfielder on loan to Elversberg for the new Bundesliga season

Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed that Nigerian-born midfielder Francis Onyeka signed a contract extension with the club on June 15, 2026, before completing a season-long loan move to SV 07 Elversberg ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga campaign.

The German club announced the agreement on Sunday, stating that the 19-year-old attacking midfielder will remain tied to Leverkusen long-term while gaining first-team experience in the top flight with Elversberg.

Onyeka enjoyed a strong breakthrough season while on loan at VfL Bochum in Bundesliga 2, where he emerged as one of the division’s standout young talents.

He recorded eight goals and one assist in 30 league appearances, a return that significantly raised his profile across German football and attracted interest from multiple clubs.

Elversberg, newly promoted to the Bundesliga, secured the loan deal as they look to strengthen their squad and improve their chances of survival in the top division.

The club views Onyeka as a key creative option who can add pace, vision and attacking threat in midfield as they prepare for a demanding season.

After signing his new contract, Onyeka described the agreement as an important step in his development and a strong motivation to continue improving.

“The contract extension at Bayer 04 is a great honour for me and, at the same time, further motivation,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge at Elversberg and to proving myself week in, week out in the Bundesliga,” Onyeka added.

He also reaffirmed his ambition to break into Leverkusen’s first team, stating that playing for the club remains a long-term childhood dream.

Born in Gummersbach, Germany, Onyeka has now committed his future to Leverkusen until the summer of 2032, underlining the club’s confidence in his potential and long-term development.
