Free eye care Bauchi: Over 300 patients receive free cataract surgeries, glasses, and treatment in major outreach by Wunti Alkhair and Albasar Foundation

More than 300 residents of Bauchi State have received free eye care services through a medical outreach organised by Wunti Alkhair Foundation in partnership with Albasar International Foundation.

The intervention focused on people living with visual impairments, particularly those unable to afford basic treatment.

The medical outreach offered screenings, medication, corrective lenses, and over 100 cataract surgeries at no cost to patients.

Hospital Manager of Makka Specialist Eye Hospital, Abdullahi Badamasi, described the programme as a vital service for underserved communities.

“These surgeries, which usually cost more than N142,000 each, were fully funded by the foundations. It’s a huge relief for the beneficiaries,” he said.

He also warned about the rising number of glaucoma cases in the state, stressing that delayed treatment could result in permanent blindness.

Umar Magaji, legal officer and representative of Wunti Alkhair Foundation, said the outreach aimed to restore vision and dignity to patients.

“Our focus is on people who would otherwise remain blind due to poverty. This programme is about compassion and access,” Magaji stated.

He explained that the foundations targeted vulnerable groups across Bauchi, offering them the opportunity to regain their sight and quality of life.

One of the beneficiaries, Aminu Bala, said, “This has changed my life. I can see again, and I’m so thankful to everyone who made this happen.”

Another patient, Aisha Alkali, shared a similar sentiment. “I had no hope left, but now I can see clearly. It’s a miracle for me and my family.”

The outreach programme, held across multiple centres in the state, is part of a wider campaign to expand free healthcare access to low-income Nigerians.
