Gombe police arrest ritualists after three men were detained for exhuming graves for alleged ritual activities

Gombe State Police Command has arrested three men in Nafada Local Government Area for allegedly engaging in ritual activities involving human remains, the force confirmed on 26 February 2026.

The suspects, identified as Umar Ibrahim, Zakari Ibrahim, and Alhaji Bappa Abdu, were apprehended following reports of grave digging at Barwo Sabon Gari Grave Yard.

A counter-insurgency and security expert, Zagazola Makama, disclosed via social media that the incident occurred on 24 February when local resident Zakari Ibrahim, 45, reported seeing Umar Ibrahim, 30, digging a grave.

During interrogation, Umar Ibrahim allegedly admitted that he was sent by his father, Ibrahim Usman, 60, to remove body parts for ritual purposes.

Makama added that Umar Ibrahim confessed to previously exhuming a human toe in 2025, which he handed over to Alhaji Bappa Abdu, 35.

All three men reportedly provided statements confirming their involvement in the alleged crimes. Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the activities.

The Gombe State Police Command emphasised the operation as part of its broader effort to prevent ritual crimes and protect local communities.

Residents expressed shock at the revelations, with community leaders urging vigilance and collaboration with law enforcement.

Authorities have assured the public that the suspects will face appropriate legal action under Nigerian law. Meanwhile, police continue to monitor graveyards and other vulnerable sites across Nafada Local Government Area to deter further incidents.
