Thierry Henry has slammed Cristiano Ronaldo for selfishness after the Portugal star blocked Bruno Fernandes’ goal chance during their 1-1 draw with DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup

Thierry Henry has openly criticised Cristiano Ronaldo, accusing the Portugal captain of selfishness for blocking a clear scoring opportunity for Bruno Fernandes during Portugal’s frustrating 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener.

Speaking on Fox Sports after the match, the Arsenal and France legend did not mince his words as he analysed a key moment that summed up Ronaldo’s disappointing performance.

“One important thing, people, please at home: the team needs to score, not you need to score,” Henry said. “Because he wants to score, he goes into the path of Bruno Fernandes. If he goes into that six-yard box, the defender has to follow him, and it would have been a tap-in for Bruno.”

Henry also pointed out Bruno Fernandes’ visible frustration on the pitch, suggesting even his club teammate was annoyed by Ronaldo’s decision.

The incident occurred as Portugal struggled to break down a resilient DR Congo side in what was expected to be a comfortable victory.

The 41-year-old Ronaldo failed to score and was largely ineffective, piling more pressure on manager Roberto Martinez ahead of Portugal’s next group game.

This latest criticism adds fuel to the growing debate about Ronaldo’s role in the national team as he continues his international career at an advanced age.

While many fans still admire his legendary status, others believe his individual approach is now costing the team at major tournaments.
