Three members inaugurated

Three newly elected members inaugurated into Nigeria’s House of Representatives following August 2025 bye-election as leadership crisis looms in minority caucus

On Tuesday, three of the five members-elect who won the August 16, 2025 bye-election into Nigeria’s House of Representatives were officially inaugurated by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen at plenary resumption.

The lawmakers sworn in include Omosede Igbenedion (APC – Ovia Federal Constituency, Edo State), Joseph Bagudu (APC – Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Kaduna State), and Mukthar Rabiu (APC – Garki/Babura Federal Constituency, Jigawa State).

Two members-elect, Elegbeji Yetunde Ayoola (Ikenne/Remo, Ogun State) and Oyekunle Fola Sunday (Ibadan North, Oyo State), were absent from the ceremony.

These five seats fell vacant due to the unfortunate deaths of lawmakers Ekene Abubakar Adams (Chikun/Kajuru), Akeremi Olaide(Ibadan North), Oriyomi Onanuga (Ikenne/Remo), and Isa Dogonyaro (Garki/Babura), as well as the resignation of Denis Idahosa who contested for Deputy Governor of Edo State.

The inauguration was attended by notable figures including former Edo Deputy Governor Phillip Shuabu, Lady Cherry Igbenedion, and Chairman of the North West Development Commission, Samaila Abdullahi Yakawada.

Following the swearing-in, the House immediately proceeded into an executive session to address the ongoing leadership crisis in the minority caucus, highlighting internal party tensions.
