Huawei China smartphone market victory sees it surpass Apple and Xiaomi with 18.1% share in Q2 2024, shipping 12.5 million units despite global setbacks

Huawei has regained leadership in the China smartphone market for the first time in over four years, surpassing Apple and key domestic competitors such as Xiaomi.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), the Shenzhen-based tech firm shipped 12.5 million units in the second quarter of 2024, securing an 18.1% market share.

This rebound is particularly notable given Huawei’s struggles with U.S. export controls and a corruption probe in Belgium.

China’s overall smartphone market shrank 4 per cent year-on-year to 69 million units, ending six straight quarters of growth.

“The latest numbers highlight Huawei’s resilience and strategic comeback,” IDC noted in its report released Tuesday.

Huawei’s resurgence poses a challenge to international rivals, particularly Apple, which previously held the lead in China’s premium segment. The report signals a shift in consumer loyalty amid changing political and economic dynamics.

Despite facing Western restrictions and internal restructuring, Huawei’s strong brand presence and domestic appeal appear to have fuelled its recovery in the Huawei China smartphone market.
