Scientists have successfully transformed ordinary skin cells into fertilisable human eggs in the laboratory for the first time.

This groundbreaking achievement, led by a US research team, brings new hope to those struggling with infertility.

The process, known as in-vitro gametogenesis, could one day enable people who cannot produce eggs to have genetically related children.

The technique involves removing the nucleus from skin cells and inserting it into a donor egg that had its nucleus removed.

This is followed by a special chromosome-reducing process called mitomeiosis, allowing the cells to behave like natural eggs.

After fertilisation via in vitro fertilisation, some embryos developed, although challenges remain.

Scientists emphasise that while promising, the technology is still years away from clinical use.

There are hurdles to overcome, such as ensuring the eggs have the correct genetic makeup to develop normally.
