Aichatou El-Rufai threatens ICPC with ₦2bn lawsuit over alleged defamatory statement, escalating ICPC defamation dispute

A fresh legal confrontation has erupted in Abuja involving former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, as his wife, Aichatou El-Rufai, has threatened a ₦2 billion defamation lawsuit over a disputed public statement issued by the agency.

The ICPC defamation dispute stems from a May 18, 2026 press release titled “Clarification on the Access Control Protocol at ICPC Headquarters, Abuja”, which Mrs El-Rufai’s legal team claims damaged her reputation and subjected her to public ridicule.

In a pre-action notice issued through her lawyers, Aichatou El-Rufai demanded the immediate withdrawal of the statement and a public apology published in at least three national newspapers as well as on the agency’s official platforms.

The legal team argued that several sections of the statement were misleading and portrayed her in a negative light, particularly references suggesting she identified herself as the wife of a defendant.

According to the lawyers, such wording cast doubt on her identity and marital status, and was capable of undermining her public standing.

They further alleged that the commission’s comments suggested she had breached official visitation protocols during a visit to the ICPC headquarters in Abuja, an assertion they described as false and defamatory.

The lawyers also faulted remarks relating to her public comments on welfare issues concerning her husband while in custody, insisting the interpretation presented her in a contradictory and embarrassing manner.

They maintained that the publication, widely circulated across media platforms, exposed her to emotional distress and reputational harm, particularly on social media.

Describing her as a private citizen with an unblemished record, the legal team accused the ICPC of using its official platform to malign her character and create public hostility against her.

As part of their demands, the lawyers requested a written undertaking from the commission to refrain from issuing similar statements in the future, alongside ₦2 billion in general, aggravated and exemplary damages.

The ICPC defamation dispute notice gives the anti-graft agency 14 days to comply or face formal legal proceedings in court.
