Ijebu royal succession clarified by Princess Onasanya, urging next Awujale to emerge from Olufadi or Tunwase families of Fusengbuwa House

Ijebu royal succession has received fresh guidance from Princess Sidikat Onasanya, the octogenarian matriarch of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House.

She emphasised that the next Awujale of Ijebuland should come from either the Olufadi or Tunwase royal families.

Princess Onasanya, eldest child of the late Prince Fasasi Adeyemi, popularly known as Obanlefa, based her view on historical, oral, and gazetted records outlining the succession procedure within Fusengbuwa Ruling House.

She stated: “Ijebu-Ode royal gazette is clear. If no princes worthy of the Awujale stool are ready and available from Abidagba Okunrin lineage of the Olufadi or Tunwase families, then princes from Abidagba Obinrin lineage may be considered, followed by those from the Abidoye lineage.”

Princess Onasanya explained that Fusengbuwa Ruling House consists of eight family units, with Olufadi and Tunwase representing the two male Abidagba Okunrin lineages.

Shenowo, Okunyandewo, Adebiyi, and Adeberu represent four female Abidagba Obinrin lineages, while Oshinuga and Adekenu constitute the Abidoye lineages.

Recounting Fusengbuwa’s genealogy, she noted he had eight wives and eight children, two of whom, Oshinuga and Adekenu, were born before he ascended the throne in 1790.

The first male child born on the throne was Olufadekemi, known as Olufadi, followed by Ali Adesimbo, later called Tunwase.

Princess Onasanya highlighted her late father, Prince Adeyemi (Obanlefa), who served as Olori Ebi of Fusengbuwa Ruling House for 25 years (1988–2013), working closely with the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, before his passing at 96.

Her statement underscores the importance of tradition and lineage in determining the rightful successor to the Awujale stool, reinforcing the historical procedures of Ijebu royal succession.
