Jim Ovia, CFR, the Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, has been bestowed with the esteemed Freedom of the City of London, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.

The ceremony, held at the Mansion House, City of London on Monday, April 7th, 2025, celebrated Ovia’s exceptional contributions to the global financial landscape, his commitment to economic development, and his impactful philanthropic endeavors.

The Freedom of the City of London, a tradition steeped in history dating back to the 13th century, recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to London or society at large. Ovia joins a distinguished list of recipients, including Nelson Mandela, Bill Gates, Sir Winston Churchill, and others.

“It is indeed a great honour to be admitted to the prestigious Freedom of the City of London,” Ovia stated. “This is not just a recognition of my personal achievements, but also a testament to the tireless efforts of the entire Zenith team who have worked diligently to establish our institution as a leading force in global finance. I dedicate this to the people of Nigeria and Africa.”

President Bola Tinubu, through a press statement by his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, congratulated Ovia, commending him for being a distinguished ambassador of Nigeria’s private sector.

Tinubu described the honour as a fitting recognition of Ovia’s contributions to business, innovation, and technology, and his role in strengthening economic ties between Africa and the world.

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, several state governors, Aliko Dangote, and other notable leaders.

This accolade adds to Ovia’s impressive list of honors, which includes the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) and National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) Award, Banker of the Year, Titan of the Year, and recognition from Forbes Africa as one of the most influential figures in banking. This  recognition highlights his achievements.
