João Cancelo Barcelona Return remains a priority as Barcelona and Al Hilal continue negotiations over the Portuguese defender’s transfer

Portuguese defender João Cancelo is expected to become a Barcelona player before the end of the summer transfer window, with talks between the Spanish club and Al Hilal continuing over the final transfer fee.

The João Cancelo Barcelona Return remains a priority for the player, who has made it clear that he only wants to join Barcelona despite negotiations between both clubs yet to be concluded.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, that the deal is still progressing but requires further discussions before an agreement can be reached.

“João Cancelo, expected to be a Barcelona player by the end of the window, never been in doubt,” Romano wrote on X.

“However, negotiations on fee with Al Hilal are still ongoing and not sealed yet at present. João has been clear: only wants Barça, same as January.”

Cancelo previously represented Barcelona during a loan spell from Manchester City, where he impressed with his attacking contribution, versatility and ability to operate across different defensive positions.

The Portuguese international’s desire to return to Camp Nou has remained unchanged, with Barcelona continuing efforts to secure a permanent deal.

The remaining challenge is reaching an agreement with Al Hilal over the financial terms of the transfer. Until those discussions are completed, the move cannot be formally finalised.

Barcelona are expected to continue negotiations as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, while Cancelo waits for the opportunity to resume his career in Catalonia.
