Justine Madugu extends his Super Falcons contract to 2027 after guiding Nigeria to 2026 WAFCON qualification

Justine Madugu has confirmed a new two-year contract as head coach of the Super Falcons, extending his leadership of Nigeria’s women’s national team until 2027.

The announcement came shortly after Madugu guided the 10-time African champions to qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, following a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic in Abeokuta, sealing a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Madugu said, “I have been given a new contract from October 1, 2025, till October 1, 2027.” The 61-year-old coach expressed satisfaction with the team’s qualification but admitted the performance was below expectations.

“The draw was not a surprise; we knew it would be tough against the Beninoise team,” he noted. “I also want to apologise to Nigerians for not fully meeting expectations. Every match carries high hopes, and sometimes there are off days.”

Madugu described the 1-1 draw as a “wake-up call” ahead of the 2026 WAFCON, which also serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Defender Ashleigh Plumptre scored her first goal for Nigeria, heading in Esther Okoronkwo’s corner in the 12th minute. Despite Benin equalising, the result ensured Nigeria’s spot in next year’s continental tournament.

Looking ahead, the Super Falcons will focus on preparations for the 2026 WAFCON, scheduled from March 17 to April 3. The team aims to defend their title and secure early qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
