Kemi Badenoch warns UK IMF bailout is a looming threat if the government fails to implement a robust economic growth strategy, the Conservative leader declared in a recent BBC interview cited by PUNCH Online on Tuesday.

Badenoch drew chilling parallels between the current economic situation and the 1976 sterling crisis, when the Labour government led by Jim Callaghan was forced to secure a $3.9 billion IMF loan to stabilize the pound.

She sharply criticised Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration for pushing the UK into a “doom loop” marked by escalating taxes, fragile public finances, and soaring borrowing costs.

“The indicators are pointing in that direction,” Badenoch said, warning that the country is not growing fast enough.

“If Labour continues with no plan for growth, we’ll end up going to the IMF cap in hand.”

Her stark warning comes as UK borrowing costs recently hit a 27-year high, rattling bond markets and fuelling economic anxiety.

Labour swiftly rejected her claims, branding them “astonishing hypocrisy.”

A Labour source said, “Kemi Badenoch’s Conservatives crashed the economy and sent mortgages spiralling. The brass neck to offer advice now is beyond belief.”

Among economists, opinions are divided.

Some right-leaning analysts have noted “eerie parallels” between the current Chancellor and Denis Healey, who managed the 1976 crisis. However, others dismiss the bailout talk as alarmist.

In 1976, facing soaring inflation and a collapsing currency, the UK’s credibility plummeted, culminating in a humiliating IMF loan – the largest ever at that time.

The episode severely damaged Labour’s economic reputation and ushered in Thatcher-era reforms.
