Jürgen Klopp warns Germany’s DFB he will leave the national team role if support fades, as he begins his new chapter as head coach

New Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp has warned the German Football Association (DFB) that he will leave the role immediately if the organisation or supporters lose confidence in his leadership, insisting that his appointment must be built on collective belief.

The former Liverpool manager made the comments during his official unveiling as Germany’s new national team coach, marking his first major role in international football after a highly successful club management career.

Klopp said he had no intention of remaining in the position if he was considered unsuitable for the job or if criticism extended beyond football matters and affected his family’s privacy.

“The day you no longer want me, I will leave, without any severance pay. If you declare tomorrow that I am inadequate, I will depart,” Klopp said.

“It cannot be just one individual; it must be a collective sentiment. If the DFB decides I am not suitable, I will go. If you act poorly and do not allow my family to have peace, I will leave.”

The German coach added that he was prepared to accept criticism related to performances and results but wanted the focus to remain on football.

“Feel free to criticise me if things do not go well. I am willing to address it. The focus is on the job,” he said.

Klopp also revealed that he views the Germany role as the highest point of his coaching career and does not currently plan to pursue another managerial position after his time with the national team.

“Jürgen Klopp does not have a career beyond the national team. Ideally, this will be the pinnacle of my career,” he said.

The 59-year-old takes charge of Germany after replacing Julian Nagelsmann, who left following the team’s disappointing early exit from the 2026 World Cup after failing to reach the Round of 16 for a third consecutive major tournament.

Klopp arrives with a strong reputation following a decorated nine-year spell at Liverpool, where he won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and other honours while transforming the club into one of Europe’s leading sides.

He had been away from management since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season before accepting the challenge of rebuilding Germany’s national team.
