Kwara expands free healthcare for vulnerable residents, boosting access through funding, training and improved service delivery

The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding access to free and subsidised healthcare services for vulnerable residents, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s health system.

The pledge was announced during a three-day capacity-building programme for health workers in Ilorin, where the Commissioner for Health, Amina El-Imam, highlighted the administration’s continued investment in inclusive healthcare delivery.

El-Imam said a significant number of residents are already benefiting from various government-backed initiatives, noting that Kwara expands free healthcare programmes to reach underserved communities across the state.

She attributed the progress to the political will of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, whose administration, she said, has prioritised the health needs of vulnerable populations.

The commissioner also underscored the importance of sustained funding, particularly through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, which has enabled the state to remain eligible for federal reimbursements and strengthen its financing framework.

She explained that the ongoing training sessions focus on revised operational guidelines and facility-based fund management, aimed at improving service delivery at the grassroots level.

According to El-Imam, recent updates to the guidelines have expanded participation, enhanced accountability and introduced more efficient procedures for disbursing funds.

She stressed that effective healthcare delivery depends on both awareness and technical expertise across all levels of the system, from federal authorities to local facilities.

Describing frontline health centres as the critical point of impact, she warned that even well-designed policies could fail without adequate capacity building.

El-Imam urged participants to engage actively in the programme, emphasising that the training is designed to provide practical knowledge that will improve both resource management and quality of care.
