Security operatives rescue 3 abducted Kwara ECWA worshippers after attack in church service, with search ongoing for remaining victims

Joint security operatives on Sunday rescued three worshippers abducted during a violent attack on an ECWA church in Omugo community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, following a coordinated response that also repelled the suspected bandits.

The incident occurred during a church service when armed men stormed the premises, causing panic among congregants before whisking away several worshippers. In total, seven members were initially abducted during the attack.

According to the Kwara State Government, security forces including forest guards and local vigilante groups quickly mobilised to confront the attackers, leading to the successful rescue of three victims.

The Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, noting that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of the remaining abducted worshippers.

She commended the swift response of the security agencies, describing their coordination as crucial in repelling the attack and limiting further casualties.

Olukoju added that government authorities have directed security operatives to intensify manhunt operations aimed at apprehending those responsible for the assault and ensuring the safe return of all remaining victims.

The commissioner condemned the attack on a place of worship, describing it as cowardly and unacceptable, and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.

She also urged residents to support ongoing security operations by staying vigilant and cooperating with law enforcement and community-based security groups.

Authorities further disclosed that forest clearance and combing operations in affected areas have continued to yield results in curbing criminal activity in the region.
