Kwara Poly protest erupts in Ilorin as students dispute management’s claim of calm, raising questions over arrests and campus security response

A protest at Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin, Nigeria, on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, has sparked conflicting accounts between the institution’s management and sections of the student body, with both sides presenting sharply different narratives about the level of unrest on campus.

The management of Kwara State Polytechnic issued a statement confirming that normal academic activities had resumed after what it described as a brief disruption triggered by the presence of security operatives around Agbede village, an incident it said led to tension among some students.

According to the institution, the situation escalated when a group of students staged a protest along Old Jebba Road, reportedly burning tyres before security agencies swiftly intervened to restore order and ensure safety across the campus.

The management further maintained that no student was arrested during the incident and assured the public that examinations continued without interruption, insisting that calm had fully returned to the institution.

However, the Kwara Poly protest account has been strongly challenged by several students on social media, who disputed the official version of events and alleged that arrests were made during the security operation.

Some students claimed that security operatives entered the campus during examination hours, while others alleged that individuals were taken away in vehicles, contradicting the institution’s assertion that no arrests occurred.

In a more critical tone, other students questioned the handling of campus security, raising concerns about the presence of operatives and the impact of the incident on academic activities and student welfare.

Despite the growing online backlash, the institution maintained its position, urging members of the public to disregard what it described as misinformation and confirming that the campus remains safe and stable.
