Minister Abubakar Kyari pledges to stabilise agricultural input prices as he distributes farming equipment to boost productivity in Nasarawa State

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has pledged to stabilise agricultural input prices in Nigeria, following the successful efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in regulating foodstuff costs.

Senator Kyari made the announcement while flagging off the distribution of 46 tricycles, nine weight scales, three destoners, seven petrol engines, seven small-scale rice mills, and two steam parboilers, among other agricultural inputs, to farmers’ groups across Nasarawa State.

The inputs, procured by the Federal Government in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development through its Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP), aim to improve rice and cassava value chains and enhance farmers’ livelihoods.

Kyari noted that the VCDP initially targeted 150,000 farmers, of whom 135,000 have so far benefited. He expressed optimism that the programme would reach its full target before the year’s end, further strengthening national food security.

“This programme reflects the vision of Mr President to alleviate the sufferings of the people and support farmers. We were able to stabilise food prices, and now we will do the same for inputs. Prices will come down through deliberate efforts, with support from state governments,” he said.

The Minister urged the beneficiary farmers to make efficient use of the equipment to boost yields and productivity. He also commended the Nasarawa State government for consistently providing counterpart funds, enabling the programme to sustain its positive impact.

Governor Abdullahi Sule lauded the Federal Government’s support, emphasising Nasarawa State’s commitment to remaining a leading agricultural hub.

“Supporting the VCDP allows us to address post-harvest wastages and strengthen the complete value chain. Our farmers continue to demonstrate independence and productivity,” he said.

Fatima Aliyu, National Programme Coordinator of the FGN/IFAD VCDP, explained that the input distribution targets farmers across Lafia, Doma, Nasarawa, Wamba, and Karu Local Government Areas, helping them cultivate enough food for the state’s growing population.

Aliyu highlighted the inclusivity of the VCDP, noting that farmers with disabilities also received inputs, contributing matching grants of N1.5 million, demonstrating trust and commitment to the programme.

Nasarawa State Commissioner for Agriculture, Tanko Tunga, said the VCDP has strengthened farmer organisations, improved market linkages, and enhanced processing and productivity.

Eunice Adgidz, State Programme Coordinator of the VCDP, pledged continued support to boost yields and tackle hunger in the state.

During the visit, Minister Kyari commissioned and inspected VCDP projects, including rice processing centres in the Kwanka and Ashangwa communities of Lafia LGA.
