Chibuzo Okereke emerges as Labour Party’s 2027 presidential candidate as the party navigates renewed internal divisions

The Labour Party has formally presented Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, following what the party described as a broad-based consensus among members and stakeholders.

The announcement was made on Saturday in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa.

According to the statement, Chibuzo Okereke emerged through a consensus process that was affirmed by party leaders and stakeholders in Abuja on May 30, 2026.

“The Labour Party is pleased to formally present Dr. Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 Presidential Election,” the statement said.

“He emerged following a broad-based consensus among party members and stakeholders which was affirmed in Abuja on 30th May, 2026.”

The development comes amid renewed internal tensions within the opposition party.

Earlier on Saturday, a faction of the Labour Party reportedly led by Julius Abure adopted the party’s National Youth Leader, Kennedy Ahanotu, as a parallel presidential candidate during separate primaries held in Abuja.

The competing endorsements underscore continuing divisions within the party as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.

Despite the dispute, the Labour Party leadership backing Okereke described him as a respected governance expert, policy strategist and advocate of institutional reform.

The party said he has earned recognition for his contributions to public policy, legislative governance and democratic development.

Okereke currently heads the ERGAF-AFRICA Legislative Governance Innovation and Policy Hub, a policy and legislative research institution focused on governance reforms and public sector innovation.

He also serves as a legislative consultant to several committees and ranking members of the National Assembly.

In addition, the party noted that he is a resident lecturer in the Department of Public Policy and Administration at Miva Open University, where he teaches governance and policy-related courses.

Beyond his academic and policy engagements, Labour Party officials said Okereke has been actively involved in youth development initiatives, educational advancement programmes and democratic reform advocacy.

The party argued that his experience and professional background position him as a candidate capable of addressing Nigeria’s governance and development challenges.

“His leadership, intellectual depth and proven commitment to good governance embody the vision of competent, accountable and transformational leadership that Nigeria urgently requires at this critical moment,” the statement added.

The emergence of rival presidential candidates within different factions of the Labour Party is expected to fuel further debate over the party’s leadership structure and electoral strategy as the race towards 2027 gathers momentum.
