Lafarge Africa EcoCrete launches Nigeria’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete, reducing emissions without sacrificing quality or durability

Lafarge Africa EcoCrete marks a groundbreaking moment as Nigeria’s first low-carbon ready-mix concrete, launched at the company’s Abuja plant in a decisive move to decarbonise the nation’s construction sector.

The innovative product delivers at least a 20 per cent reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional concrete, without any compromise on strength or durability, setting a new standard for sustainable building materials.

At the launch ceremony, Group Managing Director Lolu Alade-Akinyemi revealed that Lafarge’s Abuja Ready-Mix plant is now fully converted to 100 per cent EcoCrete production, signalling the company’s firm commitment to sustainability, excellence, and customer satisfaction.

“EcoCrete is a bold step forward in our journey to innovate and lead the Nigerian construction industry towards greener practices,” Alade-Akinyemi said. “We are proud to shape a future where economic growth and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.”

The product launch was warmly welcomed by key stakeholders, including Temitope Akinyemi, Special Adviser on Climate Finance & Green Growth, who emphasised that EcoCrete aligns perfectly with Nigeria’s Green Growth Strategy.

“This innovation demonstrates Nigeria’s readiness to lead in sustainable construction, balancing development needs with environmental stewardship,” Akinyemi remarked.

Huaxin’s Vice President for International Business, Xu Gang, highlighted the collaboration between global expertise and local ambition, praising the full conversion of the Abuja plant as a testament to Lafarge’s confidence in Nigeria’s construction future.

Environmental regulators are also backing the initiative. Professor Innocent Bariate Barikor, CEO of NESREA, lauded Lafarge’s environmental stewardship and expressed eagerness to collaborate on further sustainability efforts.

“EcoCrete showcases a commitment to maximising natural resources, reducing environmental impact, and promoting resource efficiency,” Barikor said. “We look forward to working together to ensure its safe and sustainable use.”

Derek Williamson, Head of Aggregates and Ready-Mix at Lafarge Africa, described EcoCrete as the result of years of innovation and research, delivering a high-performance product with significantly reduced carbon footprint.
