Lagos police baby sale arrest as a 30-year-old man allegedly sells his sister’s one-month-old baby for N2 million in Ikorodu

The Nigeria Police Force in Lagos has arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly selling his sister’s one-month-old baby for N2 million in the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu.

The suspect, whose identity was withheld, reportedly sold the child to raise money for their mother’s burial, according to police authorities.

The baby’s mother later reported the incident, prompting officers to arrest the suspect and begin an investigation into the disturbing case.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department at Panti for further investigation.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, the suspect admitted to the act and blamed severe financial hardship.

“Hardship pushed me to commit the act. My sister agreed to the idea,” the suspect said.

The suspect explained that he met the alleged buyer through Facebook and arranged the exchange at the Mile 2 area of Lagos.

According to the suspect, a man sent by the buyer collected the baby, after which the woman transferred N2 million into his bank account.

The suspect claimed that he later gave his sister N500,000 from the money and used the remaining balance to organise their mother’s burial.

However, the baby’s mother later demanded the return of the child and reported the matter to the police, accusing the suspect of using charms to convince her to agree to the arrangement.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dayo Akinbisehin, confirmed that investigations are ongoing.

Akinbisehin said the suspect would be charged to court once the investigation is completed.

Authorities are also making efforts to trace the alleged buyer and locate the missing child.
