Lagos Task Force arrests 49 suspected criminals during a Victoria Island sting operation, reinforcing efforts to restore order and public safety

Lagos Task Force arrests criminals in a midnight sting operation that led to the apprehension of 49 suspects across criminal hideouts in Victoria Island.

The operation, carried out by the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, was conducted in response to mounting complaints from residents about insecurity and growing disorder.

The raid, which began around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, was led by the agency’s chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele. The operation covered locations such as Maroko Sandfill, Bonny Camp, and other strategic black spots within the upscale district. Of the 49 individuals arrested, 48 were male and one was female.

Akerele said the crackdown was informed by credible intelligence and reports of disturbances caused by hooligans, street urchins, and petty criminals. He described the exercise as part of a broader campaign to rid Lagos of criminal enclaves and restore peace and order.

“Those who choose to undermine the peace and security of our communities must desist or be prepared to face the full weight of the law. We will not relent in our efforts to ensure a safer and cleaner Lagos,” he stated.

He also explained that the agency had intensified its weekly enforcement activities, now conducting operations at least three times a week. These efforts focus on flushing out illegal settlements and neutralising criminal networks across identified flashpoints.

According to Akerele, all 49 suspects have since been arraigned in court under applicable state laws. He reaffirmed the task force’s mission to create a serene, secure, and law-abiding environment for Lagos residents.

The Victoria Island operation is the latest in a series of proactive security actions by the state’s enforcement unit aimed at discouraging public nuisance and illegal occupation.

Residents have continued to express concern about the increasing presence of criminal elements, particularly in commercial and residential zones.

This latest action has been widely welcomed by stakeholders who view it as a necessary step in safeguarding lives and property.
