Ademola Lookman inspires Atletico Madrid to the Champions League semi-finals despite a 2-1 loss to Barcelona, sealing progress on aggregate

Ademola Lookman delivered a decisive performance on Tuesday as Atletico Madrid secured a place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals despite a 2-1 second-leg defeat to FC Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

Atletico Madrid semi-final qualification was confirmed on aggregate, following their 2-0 first-leg advantage, with Lookman’s crucial first-half goal proving pivotal in a tightly contested encounter.

Barcelona started brightly and nearly scored within the opening minute, but goalkeeper Juan Musso produced an early save to deny Lamine Yamal.

The visitors struck first through Yamal, who capitalised on a defensive lapse before Ferran Torres doubled Barcelona’s lead with a powerful strike into the top corner, briefly levelling the tie on aggregate.

Barcelona continued to dominate large spells of the first half, but Atletico Madrid responded under pressure, with Ademola Lookman finishing from close range after a well-worked move to restore his side’s aggregate advantage.

The goal, his sixth since joining Atletico in January, shifted momentum firmly back in favour of the Spanish side.

Barcelona thought they had levelled again in the second half through Torres, but the effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

Despite sustained pressure from the Catalan side, Atletico held firm with disciplined defending, while Barcelona’s hopes were further damaged by a late red card for Eric Garcia.

In the closing stages, Barcelona pushed aggressively for an equaliser, but Atletico’s defensive structure remained intact to secure progression to the last four.

Lookman’s influence was central to the result, as he contributed not only the vital goal but also creative and defensive work throughout the match.

He registered one goal, created two chances, completed 13 of 14 passes, and contributed across both attacking and defensive phases in a standout all-round performance.
