Afrobeats musician Made Kuti says he has no interest in activism, citing his family’s sacrifices and stating they have done enough for Nigeria’s progress

Made Kuti activism stance has stirred conversation following his recent declaration that he is not interested in pursuing political activism like his famous forebears.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Pulse Breakdown, the Nigerian Afrobeats musician said his family has already sacrificed enough in the fight for a better Nigeria.

Citing his great-grandmother, the late Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, Made recalled how she was thrown from a building for her activism.

“She was a righteous person that was so dedicated to the growth of Africa. She risked her life for everything. They killed her for it,” he said.

He further acknowledged the work of his grandfather Fela Kuti, his father Femi Kuti, and his uncle Seun Kuti, all of whom have used their platforms to demand social and political reform.

But for Made, the personal toll on his family has shaped his decision.

“You might reflect and just say, ‘Well, what’s the point of it if all these people couldn’t bring change?’ What’s the chance that my song or my performance can really bring change?” he asked.

“I believe it’s not so much in the power of the individual. It’s the power of the collective.”

Made stressed that he does not see himself as an idealist. He believes that every Nigerian must take responsibility for national progress, but he is careful not to sacrifice his wellbeing in the process.

“I’ve really no interest in activism. I’m happy to be on the right side of history, but not at the cost of the wellbeing of my family and the people around me,” he said.

Although he expresses hope that Nigeria will one day become great again, Made insists that he will not be the one making personal sacrifices to make that happen.

Instead, he focuses on living truthfully and playing his part as a citizen and artist.

His remarks have sparked debate, particularly given the Kuti family’s historical ties to activism and the expectation that he might continue the tradition.

Still, Made remains firm in his position that activism, if it is to be effective, must be a shared responsibility—not a personal burden.
