A high-stakes World Cup group-stage showdown will take centre stage on Friday as France face Norway in a decisive Group I fixture, with Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland set to headline one of the tournament’s most anticipated clashes.

The encounter brings together two of football’s most in-form forwards, with both players level on four goals each in the race for the Golden Boot, just behind Lionel Messi, who leads the chart with five.

France and Norway have both impressed in the tournament so far, setting up a winner-takes-top-spot scenario at the Foxborough Stadium outside Boston.

France, who have delivered dominant performances against Senegal and Iraq, hold a slight advantage due to superior goal difference and require only a draw to finish first in the group.

Norway, however, arrive in strong form after victories over Iraq and Senegal, with Haaland playing a central role in their unbeaten run.

The Manchester City striker has enjoyed a standout debut World Cup campaign, combining clinical finishing with an increasingly confident presence on the global stage.

Despite the magnitude of the fixture, Haaland downplayed expectations of a title challenge while acknowledging the quality of France’s squad.

“To win the World Cup, absolutely not,” he said. “We’ve won 12 competitive games in a row now. I’m part of something special, making history, and I’m extremely proud to be Norwegian.”

France’s preparations have been affected off the pitch following the temporary departure of head coach Didier Deschamps from the camp after the death of his mother. Assistant coach Guy Stephan is currently in charge of team affairs.

Guy Stephan described the situation as challenging but insisted the squad remains focused on maintaining momentum in the decisive fixture.

France will be aware that finishing second in the group could result in a far more difficult knockout path, potentially including early meetings with Ivory Coast and Brazil.

Elsewhere in the competition on Friday, Spain face Uruguay in a key Group H clash, while Cape Verde continue their remarkable run against Saudi Arabia.

Belgium also aim to secure qualification for the knockout stages when they face New Zealand in Group G.
