Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé was whistled by sections of supporters at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on Thursday during a 2-0 La Liga victory over Real Oviedo in Madrid, Spain, amid growing frustration with the French star’s recent performances and conduct.

The France international, Kylian Mbappé, returned from a thigh injury to make a substitute appearance for Real Madrid, who secured a routine win but continue a second consecutive season without a major trophy after Barcelona were confirmed as league champions last week.

Tension between Mbappé and parts of the Madrid fanbase has reportedly intensified in recent weeks, with some supporters questioning his commitment to the club during a challenging campaign.

The whistles from the stands followed Madrid’s disappointing defeat in El Clásico at Camp Nou, a result that sealed Barcelona’s title triumph and deepened scrutiny on the squad’s leadership and consistency.

Despite the reception, Mbappé attempted to maintain composure as he rejoined the action in the second half, offering a subdued response to the crowd reaction.

Earlier in the match, Gonzalo García opened the scoring for Madrid before half-time after a low assist from Brahim Díaz, while Jude Bellingham sealed the victory with a composed finish in the second half.

Madrid controlled large spells of the contest against already-relegated Oviedo, although the match was played in front of noticeable empty sections inside the Bernabéu.

The atmosphere reflected broader unrest around the club, with some fans also expressing dissatisfaction towards Vinícius Júnior, who was similarly targeted with whistles during the game.

Mbappé, who has scored 41 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions this season, was introduced by coach Álvaro Arbeloa, as Madrid continue to navigate a turbulent period both on and off the pitch.

Club president Florentino Pérez recently called elections, adding to the sense of uncertainty surrounding the Santiago Bernabéu hierarchy.
