Messi sparked World Cup concern after limping off for Inter Miami, though coach insists the substitution was precautionary

Argentina forward Lionel Messi has sparked fresh injury concerns ahead of the World Cup after requesting to be substituted during Inter Miami CF’s Major League Soccer match against Philadelphia Union on Sunday in Miami, United States.

Lionel Messi, the 38-year-old Inter Miami CF captain and Argentina national team skipper, was withdrawn in the 73rd minute after appearing to clutch the back of his left leg during the wet-weather fixture.

The forward walked off the pitch unaided and headed straight down the tunnel, prompting immediate concern among supporters.

The incident raised early fears of a possible hamstring issue, an area Messi has previously struggled with since joining Inter Miami CF in 2023.

However, Inter Miami CF head coach Guillermo Hoyos moved to calm concerns after the match, insisting the decision was precautionary and not linked to a serious injury.

“As far as I know, we don’t have a report on that yet, but he really was fatigued,” Hoyos said.

“He was tired; the pitch was heavy and when in doubt, the standard approach is always to ensure you don’t take any risks.”

Messi has not yet confirmed his participation for the Argentina national football team at the upcoming World Cup, although he is widely expected to feature in what would be a record-equalling sixth appearance at the tournament.

Since moving to Major League Soccer, Messi has carefully managed his playing time due to fitness concerns, with occasional spells out of action linked to muscle fatigue and minor injuries.
