NDLEA transfers Pregabalin capsules to NAFDAC after intercepting 450,000 pills in Kano, marking a crucial move against prescription drug abuse

NDLEA transfers Pregabalin capsules intercepted in Kano to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), marking a significant step in Nigeria’s fight against prescription drug abuse.

The 450,000 capsules of Pregabalin were seized by a patrol team along the Kano–Hadejia road, concealed in 60 cartons inside a van without any supporting documentation.

The consignment was moved to the NDLEA office for further investigation.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Sadiq Maigatari, no legal ownership could be established for the drugs, prompting swift enforcement measures.

Pregabalin, an anticonvulsant typically used to treat epilepsy and neuropathic pain, has become one of Nigeria’s most widely abused prescription drugs, especially among young people.

Its misuse is associated with addiction, mental health issues, and rising social unrest in northern regions.

Acting on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in November 2024, NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) directed the transfer of the intercepted capsules to NAFDAC for forensic testing and regulatory review.

The handover reflects improved inter-agency coordination under the leadership of ACGN A.I. Ahmad, who reaffirmed the Kano State Command’s dedication to strategic cooperation and regulatory enforcement.

NAFDAC’s state coordinator, in receiving the consignment, commended NDLEA’s compliance with the MoU and pledged continued collaboration.

“This joint action underscores both agencies’ determination to disrupt the illicit distribution of controlled pharmaceuticals and to protect public health and safety,” Maigatari stated.

The NDLEA has warned repeatedly about the growing abuse of drugs like Pregabalin, tramadol, and codeine.

By tightening surveillance and intercepting shipments, the agency hopes to reduce the flow of these substances into the black market.
