Federal Government expresses solidarity after at least 21 people died in Gansu Province and commends China’s rescue efforts
The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound sympathy to the Government and people of China following the devastating landslide that struck Tanchang County, claiming at least 21 lives and leaving rescue teams searching for more victims.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, said Nigeria was deeply saddened by the tragedy, which occurred on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and all those affected.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria expresses deep condolences to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China following the tragic landslide that struck Tanchang County in Gansu Province on Tuesday, July 7, 2026,” the statement read.
The ministry said the government was mourning the lives lost while offering prayers for the injured and those who suffered property losses during the disaster.
“Nigeria mourns the loss of lives in this disaster, which has claimed at least 21 lives, with others affected amid the rescue operations.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, the injured, and all those who have lost loved ones or property in this unfortunate incident,” the statement added.
The Federal Government also commended the rapid response mounted by Chinese emergency authorities and rescue personnel, describing their efforts as vital in saving lives and providing immediate relief to affected communities.
“Nigeria commends the swift response of the Chinese authorities and rescue teams in their efforts to save lives and provide relief to those impacted,” the ministry said.
Reaffirming the enduring relationship between both countries, Nigeria noted that its strategic partnership with China remains rooted in mutual respect, friendship and longstanding cooperation across several sectors, including trade, infrastructure, education and technology.
“Nigeria and China share a long-standing strategic partnership built on mutual respect, friendship, and cooperation.
Nigeria stands in solidarity with China during this difficult time, and we are confident in the resilience of the Chinese people and government as they work towards recovery and rehabilitation in the affected areas,” the statement stated.
The message concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of those who died, a swift recovery for the injured and strength for families mourning their loved ones.
The expression of sympathy comes as rescue and recovery operations continue in Gansu Province following one of the latest deadly landslides to hit the region.
China has experienced a series of weather-related disasters in recent years, prompting authorities to strengthen emergency preparedness and disaster response systems in vulnerable mountainous communities.
Nigeria and China have maintained close diplomatic relations for more than five decades, with both countries continuing to deepen cooperation through infrastructure development, investment, trade and bilateral exchanges.
