Nigeria mourns Southern Africa floods as Abuja condoles South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe over deadly flooding and humanitarian losses

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed condolences to the governments and peoples of South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe following devastating floods that have claimed more than 100 lives and displaced thousands across Southern Africa.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed Nigeria’s position in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, describing the flooding as a tragic humanitarian disaster caused by weeks of torrential rainfall.

As of Friday, the floods had submerged communities, overwhelmed major rivers and destroyed roads and bridges, leaving large populations cut off from basic services.

Weather authorities across the region have issued further warnings, heightening fears of additional flooding in the coming days.

In the statement, Nigeria mourns Southern Africa floods and commiserated with the affected countries over the scale of human and material losses.

The ministry noted that agricultural production and essential services have been severely disrupted, compounding the suffering of already vulnerable communities.

The Federal Government also expressed concern about secondary humanitarian consequences arising from the disaster, including food insecurity, disease outbreaks and the increased vulnerability of women, children and other at-risk groups.

Nigeria declared its solidarity with ongoing rescue, evacuation and relief operations being carried out by national authorities, regional bodies and international humanitarian partners.

The statement acknowledged the resilience and resolve shown by the affected countries as they respond to the emergency and begin recovery efforts.

The government further highlighted the growing threat posed by climate-related extreme weather events across Africa, stressing the need for stronger regional cooperation, effective early warning systems and climate adaptation strategies to reduce future risks.

Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to bilateral, regional and multilateral cooperation in promoting disaster preparedness, humanitarian response and climate resilience, assuring the affected countries of its continued goodwill and support.

Ebienfa added that the thoughts and prayers of the Government and people of Nigeria remain with the governments and peoples of South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and all others affected during what he described as a profoundly difficult period.
