The clarification followed reports and public speculation over the alleged presence of United States troops in Nigeria.

In a statement signed in Abuja by the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, Defence Headquarters said all engagements under the partnership are conducted with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and strictly within existing bilateral frameworks.

Maj.-Gen. Uba explained that a recent two-day high-level Working Group meeting involving senior U.S. government officials and Nigerian counterparts at the Office of the National Security Adviser formed part of ongoing cooperation.

The meeting, he said, followed earlier engagements held in the United States.

According to Maj.-Gen. Uba, discussions centred on proposals aimed at strengthening cooperation mechanisms, improving coordination and enhancing accountability in joint efforts to counter terrorism and other transnational threats, while prioritising the protection of civilians and community safety.

Maj.-Gen. Uba added that the proposals were still under review by relevant Nigerian authorities.
