Nigerian Army Day celebration sparks emotional call for unity as 8 Division urges citizens to support military’s mission of peace, security and national service

The Nigerian Army has called on citizens to stand united in support of its mission as part of this year’s Nigerian Army Day celebration.

The appeal came from the 8 Division Nigerian Army, Sokoto, during a sensitisation event at Yahaya Abdulkarim Model Primary and Secondary School in the state capital on Tuesday.

This year marks the 162nd Nigerian Army Day celebration, with commemorative activities held across the country. At the Sokoto engagement, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, represented by Brigadier General Aliyu Musa, emphasised the importance of cooperation between the military and the general public.

He stated that the Nigerian Army remains focused on maintaining peace and sovereignty in the face of evolving national security threats.

“The Nigerian Army remains a cornerstone of national defence, and we are continuously evolving to meet modern security challenges,” said Ajose.

Ajose highlighted the Nigerian Army’s longstanding values of professionalism, resilience, and service to the nation. He encouraged young Nigerians, regardless of background, to consider joining the military, stressing that the army offers equal opportunities for both professionals and non-professionals.

He noted that the armed forces remain committed to defending the rights of all citizens while strengthening national unity.

The session, attended by students, teachers and officers, was aimed at educating young people about the significance of military service and career prospects within the armed forces.

According to Ajose, the Nigerian Army Day celebration this year includes a variety of national activities, such as prayers, interdenominational services, community outreach, and ceremonies designed to strengthen bonds between civilians and military families.

Also addressing the students, Acting Director of Education Services, Lieutenant Colonel Nuhu Yahaya, provided guidance on the pathways to becoming commissioned and non-commissioned officers.

He explained the selection requirements, duration of training, and the many specialised fields available within the military. He encouraged students to see the army not just as a force of combat but as a professional institution serving the national interest.

In her remarks, the School Principal, Murjanatu Muhammad, thanked the Nigerian Army for taking time to engage directly with young people.

“This session has inspired many of our students to think about service to their country,” she said. Headteacher Hajia Lubabatu Musa also praised the initiative, calling it “timely and patriotic.”

In a related development, Mrs Meg Ndidi Ajose, Chairperson of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, 8 Division, delivered a heartfelt tribute to the wives of military personnel. Speaking at a separate event held in Sokoto, she recognised the often-overlooked contributions of military spouses.

“The strength behind the uniform is a woman,” Mrs Ajose said. “We are the moral compass, peacebuilders, and bridges between the military and civilian communities.”

She spoke passionately about the role of women in maintaining family cohesion, promoting hygiene, encouraging education, and building peaceful communities. Her address was met with applause and was a reminder of the shared sacrifices made by families of those in service.

The Nigerian Army Day celebration, which continues throughout the week, provides a moment of reflection on the role of the military in securing Nigeria’s future.

The 8 Division’s outreach in Sokoto has not only honoured that legacy but also helped inspire a new generation to serve.
