The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, Lagos, announces that 60 graduates will receive Distinction certificates among the 707 students graduating at its 7th convocation ceremony on Tuesday, May 6, 2025

The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), Ogba, Lagos, is set to hold its 7th convocation ceremony on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, where a total of 707 students will graduate across its National Diploma, Higher National Diploma, and Postgraduate Diploma programmes. Notably, 60 of these graduating students will receive Distinction certificates, marking their academic excellence.

The Provost of the Institute, Mr Gbenga Adefaye, announced these details during a press briefing held on Wednesday. He highlighted the Institute’s continued commitment to providing quality training in communication and media, even amidst challenges such as declining admission numbers post-COVID-19 and the increasing number of universities offering similar programmes.

A key highlight of the convocation events will be the convocation lecture, scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025. The lecture, titled ‘AI and Public Governance,’ will be delivered by the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr Bashir Adeniyi.

This significant event will take place at the Sir Kensington Adebukunola Adebutu Media Resource Centre and is expected to draw scholars, public servants, media practitioners, and various industry stakeholders.

The convocation ceremonies will be presided over by veteran journalist and the Chairman of the NIJ Governing Council, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, adding further prestige to the occasion.

Mr Adefaye also addressed the financial challenges faced by the Institute, noting that as a non-federal institution, NIJ is unable to access the national student loan scheme despite its contributions through taxation.

Looking towards the future, Mr Adefaye emphasized the importance of technology and artificial intelligence in the field of journalism. “We encourage our students to embrace technology and artificial intelligence as tools for innovation and growth.

We may also introduce AI-checking software to maintain academic integrity,” he stated, indicating the Institute’s proactive approach to adapting to the evolving media landscape.
