NiMet inaugurates AI research team to boost weather predictions and updates staff conditions of service to enhance efficiency and innovation

The Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Charles Anosike, has inaugurated the Agency’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Integration Team to enhance the accuracy and accessibility of weather forecasts.

Prof. Anosike explained that the initiative is part of NiMet’s ongoing drive for innovation, digital transformation, and improved service delivery in meteorological and climate services.

The AI team is tasked with identifying best practices for integrating AI into operational forecasting systems, complementing traditional physics-based models.

“The integration of AI will accelerate prediction speed, improve accuracy, and expand access to critical weather data,” Prof. Anosike said.

“Building internal AI capacity is key to sustaining NiMet’s leadership in technological innovation while responsibly deploying emerging technologies for aviation safety, agriculture, disaster risk reduction, and national development.”

The Agency also announced the completion of a comprehensive review of its Conditions of Service, aimed at aligning staff welfare, career progression, and institutional efficiency with contemporary public service standards.

Dr. Nasir Sani, NiMet’s Director of Human Resources Management and Administration, explained that the review, undertaken collaboratively with staff unions, formalises procedures for appointments, promotions, disciplinary actions, and leave entitlements.

The updated framework received approvals from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

“The revised Conditions of Service will enhance staff motivation and productivity, enabling NiMet to deliver timely and accurate weather and climate services,” Dr. Sani said.

Prof. Anosike highlighted that members of the AI team were drawn from various agency units to ensure cross-functional expertise, while ongoing reforms are expected to strengthen NiMet’s human capital and institutional efficiency.
