NLC rejects NSITF bill, calling it ill-motivated and harmful to workers; union holds emergency meeting to discuss potential impacts

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced an emergency meeting to discuss the proposed Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) Bill, currently at its second reading in the Senate.

The notice, issued on Wednesday by NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, stated that the sole agenda of the meeting is to deliberate on the bill, which the union has strongly rejected.

Upah said, “We are strongly opposed to the bill; it is ill-motivated, ill-advised and will spell doom for the letter and spirit of what NSITF ought to be.”

The union’s concerns mirror those expressed by the organised private sector of Nigeria, which recently opposed the legislation, arguing that it would benefit the government at the expense of employees and other stakeholders.

The NSITF Bill seeks to repeal the existing NSITF Act and replace it with the Nigeria Social Security Trust Fund Act 2025. It was sponsored by Senator Fasuyi Cyril of the All Progressives Congress, representing Ekiti State in the 10th National Assembly.
