Obi Global Terrorism Index Nigeria warning as Peter Obi decries rising terrorism deaths and urges urgent action on worsening insecurity

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party figure, Peter Gregory Obi, on Thursday raised concern over Nigeria’s worsening security situation following the latest Global Terrorism Index report, which ranked the country among the most terror-affected nations worldwide.

The Obi Global Terrorism Index Nigeria warning was issued in a statement shared via his official X account, where the former Anambra State governor described the report as a “painful indictment” of what he termed failed leadership and misplaced priorities.

Obi noted that Nigeria recorded one of the highest increases in terrorism-related deaths, stressing that the development stands in contrast to global trends where many countries are reporting a decline in violent extremism.

He argued that the situation reflects deeper governance challenges, including weak institutional control, corruption, and what he described as a persistent neglect of security as a core responsibility of the state.

According to him, the country continues to face escalating threats from Boko Haram insurgents, the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, as well as widespread kidnapping and rural violence perpetrated by armed groups.

Obi questioned the effectiveness of government in protecting citizens, stating that the normalisation of insecurity should not be accepted under any circumstances.

He further warned that Nigerians continue to lose their lives daily while, in his words, those in authority appear disconnected from the severity of the crisis.

Reiterating his call for urgent reforms, Obi urged a shift from rhetoric to measurable action, insisting that governance must prioritise the protection of lives and restoration of public safety.

He concluded that a secure Nigeria is a fundamental right of every citizen, adding that the current trajectory must be urgently reversed through accountable leadership and effective security strategy.
