John Terry says Obi Mikel is disappointed about Nigeria missing the 2026 World Cup, joking it limits his punditry role during the tournament

Former Chelsea captain John Terry has suggested that ex-Super Eagles skipper John Obi Mikel is disappointed over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, joking that it limits his involvement in tournament commentary.

Terry made the remarks during a virtual media roundtable on SuperSport, where he reflected on Nigeria’s absence from the global showpiece.

He described Nigeria as a major miss at the tournament, praising the quality of players the country has produced over the years.

“I would’ve loved to see the top team, like Nigeria, be there because they’ve got some great individuals,” Terry said.

He then added a light-hearted comment about Obi Mikel’s media role, suggesting the former midfielder is frustrated because he will not have as many opportunities for World Cup punditry.

“I know Obi is very upset that Nigeria are not there. It means he can’t do more commentating on the World Cup. That is why he was upset,” he added.

Nigeria will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after failing to secure qualification, marking another disappointing absence for the Super Eagles on the global stage.
