A Ogun woman was allegedly killed by her husband following years of domestic abuse, sparking police investigation into the fatal stabbing incident

A mother of three, Ganiyat Ayanwale, was allegedly killed by her husband, Ayoola Ayanwale, on Thursday night at Olutayo Alao Street, River Valley Estate.

According to Murtala Sogbade, the deceased’s brother, the marriage had been plagued by years of domestic violence, with Ayoola Ayanwale reportedly known for “smoking weed” and neglecting his family.

“The beatings started early in the marriage. She had wanted a divorce for some time, but the family tried to mediate,” Sogbade said, adding that the couple had been married for 14 years.

After the fatal attack, Ayoola allegedly attempted to take his own life by consuming a suspected poisonous substance.

Police later found him gasping for breath in an open field at Sotubo, where a manhunt had been launched.

Three knives and a bottle containing a suspected liquid substance were recovered at the scene, alongside the suspect’s mobile phones and identification cards.

Neighbours confirmed a long history of domestic abuse, with one witness saying the violence escalated after minor disputes.

“She once told me she was always happy when he was not around because that was when she had peace of mind,” a neighbour who identified herself on X as @Irebamiolakanmi said.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the case and said it had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

“The bodies have been deposited in the mortuary,” he said.

Thursday’s killing adds to a disturbing pattern of femicide cases in Ogun State.
