Omoku youth leader beheaded in suspected cult attack as aide is shot dead, prompting police investigation in Rivers State

Gunmen suspected to be cultists have killed the President of the Omoku Youth Federation, Ifeanyi Azuazu, after abducting him from a public spot in Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area, Rivers State.

The attackers also shot dead Azuazu’s personal aide, Chigozie Oluwu, during the assault which occurred at about 6 pm on Thursday along Ogolo Street, off Palace Road in Omoku town.

Witnesses said about seven assailants arrived in two vehicles and confronted Azuazu at a drinking spot, ordering him into one of the cars. Oluwu reportedly attempted to intervene and was immediately shot. The gunmen then drove away with the youth leader.

The incident triggered panic in the area as residents and business owners fled for safety. A video circulating on social media showed local youths assisting security personnel in evacuating Oluwu’s body.

The headless body of Azuazu was later discovered in a nearby bush on Friday afternoon by a local vigilante group.

The ONELGA Security and Planning Advisory Committee confirmed the killings. Its Public Relations Officer, Godnews Nkem, said intelligence efforts led to the recovery of Azuazu’s body and urged residents to remain calm while security agencies investigate the incident.

Rivers State Police Command spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the attack and described it as cult-related. Iringe-Koko said the Commissioner of Police had ordered a full-scale investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
