Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka has completed a permanent transfer to newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City after a successful loan spell that helped secure promotion

Nigeria midfielder Frank Onyeka has joined newly promoted Premier League club Coventry City on a permanent deal, the club announced on Tuesday 30 June 2026.

The 28-year-old initially moved to the Sky Blues on loan from Brentford in January and played a pivotal role in Frank Lampard’s side’s Championship-winning campaign.

Onyeka made 14 appearances, scoring one goal and providing one assist, with his strike proving decisive in a 3-2 victory over Derby County in April.

Onyeka brings significant Premier League experience to Coventry, having made 75 top-flight appearances for Brentford. Speaking after the transfer, he expressed his delight.

“I’m really excited for the new season with Coventry. When I first joined last season, I came here with two goals: to win the Championship and help Coventry earn promotion to the Premier League,” he said.

He added: “I will give everything to the team, fight for every ball, fight for my teammates and bring my experience. My ambition now is to help the club stay in the Premier League and finish as high as we can.” The move takes effect on Wednesday 1 July.

Onyeka leaves Brentford after 87 appearances in all competitions since joining from Danish club Midtjylland in July 2021.

He was Brentford’s first signing of the Premier League era and represented Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations during his debut season. He also spent time on loan at Augsburg in the Bundesliga.

This permanent transfer marks another milestone for Nigerian players in English football.

It comes on a day of notable African sporting success, as Morocco became the first team from the continent to reach the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup with a penalty shoot-out victory over the Netherlands.

Coventry fans will look forward to Onyeka’s contributions as the club prepares for its return to the Premier League, while Brentford supporters may see him return to the Gtech Community Stadium when the sides meet in the 2026/27 season.
