OPay cybersecurity laboratory UniCal project as fintech firm unveils cybersecurity lab plan and supports university sports development in Calabar

The OPay cybersecurity laboratory UniCal project was disclosed during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the fintech firm to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Offiong, in Calabar.

Leader of the OPay delegation, Itoro Udo, said the initiative forms part of the company’s commitment to delivering on earlier promises made under its ongoing partnership with the university, which began in 2023.

According to Udo, the cybersecurity laboratory will be implemented in collaboration with Hunter Flex Intercoms Construction Company, which has been engaged to execute the project.

He added that the OPay cybersecurity laboratory UniCal project is designed to enhance practical learning and equip students with advanced digital security competencies in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.

Udo also revealed that OPay will support the university in hosting the 2026 Nigeria University Games scheduled for August, describing the initiative as part of the firm’s broader investment in youth development and education.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Offiong Offiong commended the fintech company for its continued engagement with the institution, describing the planned laboratory as timely and essential for strengthening UniCal’s technological infrastructure.

He said the facility would help position students competitively in emerging fields such as cybersecurity, digital innovation and financial technology.

Prof. Offiong further noted that preparations were already underway for the university games and assured that UniCal would work closely with partners to ensure a successful hosting, while also sustaining sports infrastructure beyond the event.
