Orji Kalu declares himself the most influential politician in Nigeria’s South East, dismissing claims that Peter Obi leads the region

Orji Kalu has declared himself the most important and influential politician in Nigeria’s South East, insisting that Peter Obi does not outrank him in political relevance or impact.

Speaking boldly during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television on Tuesday, the former Abia State Governor and current Senate Chief Whip dismissed suggestions that Obi has become the region’s political leader.

“I am a member of the APC, and I don’t want to discuss Peter Obi for any reason,” Orji Kalu said firmly, maintaining his composure even as the interviewer pressed for clarity on his position.

When asked why he appeared uncomfortable whenever Obi’s name was mentioned, Kalu reiterated his stance. “No, because I don’t want to discuss him.

Any day you want to discuss him with me, give us two hours and you’ll be the moderator. Keep it there, I’ll be able to sort it out,” he added.

Responding to suggestions that Obi is widely regarded as the South East’s political leader, Kalu dismissed the idea outright.

“He is not my leader. I am the most important politician from the South East zone. I won two states before on the platform of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA). I’ve run for president before; my 4.9 million votes are still there,” he asserted confidently.

The APC chieftain also pointed to his past political achievements as evidence of his enduring influence, recalling how his party once secured ministerial and ambassadorial positions under the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

“In 2007, we achieved a lot with PPA. We had ministers, ambassadors, and other key appointments,” Kalu said. “So you cannot be telling me who is or isn’t a leader. Anybody can run for president.”

Kalu’s remarks come amid an ongoing power struggle for political dominance in the South East, where Obi continues to enjoy massive grassroots support following his strong performance in the 2023 presidential election.

Despite Obi’s growing popularity, Kalu maintains that his political legacy and reach across the region remain unmatched, reinforcing his image as one of the South East’s most seasoned and influential power players.
