The 27-year-old Galatasaray forward has scored 35 goals in 51 appearances, while Yekini netted 37 in 58 matches for the national team.

Osimhen first gained global attention in 2015 as the top scorer with 10 goals at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile, where Nigeria emerged champions.

At the peak of his career, the former SSC Napoli forward is widely tipped to surpass Yekini’s tally in coming years.

On Wednesday, history beckons as Osimhen faces Morocco, with support from Alex Iwobi, Akor Adams, and Ademola Lookman offering opportunities to equal the ‘Goalsfather’s’ record.

Iwobi, also enjoying an outstanding AFCON campaign, is set to earn his 96th cap, moving closer to Nigeria’s centurion mark alongside former captain Joseph Yobo and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, who reached 101 caps.
