Osimhen Super Eagles reliance claims dismissed as the striker says Nigeria have enough quality to succeed at AFCON 2025 in Morocco

Super Eagles striker Victor James Osimhen has dismissed suggestions that Nigeria’s national team depends solely on him, insisting the squad has enough quality to succeed with or without his presence.

Osimhen spoke ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria’s senior men’s team will aim to end a 12-year wait for continental silverware.

The Galatasaray forward acknowledged his recent influence but rejected claims that the Super Eagles lack options in his absence.

Victor Osimhen said the team boasts depth and talent across all departments, stressing that responsibility does not rest on one player.

“I just try to give my everything. We have so many talented players in this squad. I’m part of them,” Osimhen told BBC Africa.

He added that other players were capable of stepping up whenever called upon, describing squad depth as a core strength.

Nigeria struggled for results during Osimhen’s absence in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, failing to record a win in five matches without the striker.

Despite that record, Osimhen maintained confidence in attacking options including Akor Adams, Paul Onuachu, and Cyriel Dessers.

The 26-year-old, widely regarded as Africa’s leading centre-forward, also praised the support he receives from Nigerian fans.

Victor Osimhen said the encouragement fuels his work rate and commitment on the pitch.

He emphasised teamwork and respect within the squad, describing a shared desire to succeed.

Head coach Eric Chelle will hope the striker remains fit as Nigeria target a first AFCON title since 2013.

Osimhen previously apologised to Nigerians after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, pledging that the AFCON campaign would serve as redemption.
