Oyo digital address system set to launch as government begins plans for house numbering and better emergency response under Governor Makinde’s Omituntun 2.0 agenda

Oyo digital address system planning is underway as the state government moves to implement a comprehensive street and house numbering project aimed at improving emergency response and urban development.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Funmilayo, during a strategic meeting with Smart City Development Konsult Limited at the ministry’s headquarters in Ibadan.

The initiative, anchored under Governor Seyi Makinde’s Omituntun 2.0 Sustainable Development Goals, will assign unique digital addresses to buildings across the state.

“As the saying goes, a promise made is a promise kept,” Funmilayo said.

“House numbering was one of the specific promises in the Omituntun 2.0 agenda, and we are doing all we can to deliver on it.”

He emphasized that a proper address system will not only aid identification and logistics but will drastically reduce emergency response time.

Funmilayo explained that the lack of house numbers contributes to delays in emergency services, such as fire response and ambulance dispatch.

He warned that in crisis moments, this delay could be the difference between life and death.

“Without house numbers, emergency responders are left guessing,” he said. “This can lead to confusion, missed addresses, and ultimately tragic outcomes.”

The digital address system is currently in the preliminary planning phase, with a full presentation expected at the Executive Council (Exco) level in the coming weeks.

The commissioner noted that he and the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Prof. Musibau Babatunde, have already briefed the governor, who gave full support to the initiative.

“Although this administration has less than two years left, we are committed to laying a solid foundation for this transformative project,” Funmilayo added.

Experts see the digital address system as a major leap toward making Oyo a smart city hub in Nigeria.

It is expected to enhance urban planning, postal services, public safety, and even e-commerce logistics in both rural and urban areas.

As the project progresses, the state government is expected to engage community stakeholders, local governments, and emergency service operators to ensure successful implementation.
